The language of Hong Kong
Cantonese is spoken by over 80 million people — in Hong Kong, Guangdong province, and Cantonese diaspora communities worldwide (Chinatowns from San Francisco to London). It's a living language with a rich oral tradition distinct from Mandarin.
Tones made learnable
Cantonese tones are the main learning curve. Wekos uses standard Jyutping romanization on every word and sentence so you always know exactly which tone to use. Audio-first drilling means you hear the pattern before you explain it.
The Wekos method
Every word and sentence comes with jyutping so you can focus on meaning and pronunciation from the start. You'll hear a full sentence before you understand every word — meaning comes from context.
Measure words, taught with the noun
Cantonese counts nouns with a classifier — 一個蘋果, one piece of apple — and which one a noun takes has to be learned with the noun. Hong Kong usage differs from Mandarin's too: 部 for machines where Mandarin says 台, 隻 for animals and for one shoe of a pair, 樖 for plants. Wekos shows the right one in front of every countable noun it teaches, in jyutping as well as characters, and you can tap it to see what it is for.
Different from Mandarin
Cantonese and Mandarin share written characters but are mutually unintelligible when spoken. Cantonese has its own grammar, vocabulary, and slang. Wekos teaches authentic Cantonese as it's actually spoken in Hong Kong.

Classifiers, taught with the noun
Every countable noun comes with the measure word it is counted with, in front of it — 一個蘋果, because 一蘋果 is not a sentence. Tap it to see what that one is for. Most courses leave this for later and most free apps never cover it.
Romanization alongside, not instead
Pinyin, jyutping and romaji sit beside the characters rather than replacing them — including on every quiz option, so a question tests whether you know the word and not whether you can already read the script.
